CI620, System Analysis and Design introduces project management controls throughout the system development life cycle and stresses the importance of an accurate communications process among user, analyst, and designer. The course introduces the stages of information system development: analysis, design, development, and implementation.

The course reviews system modeling, data and information modeling techniques, as well as the software used as system modeling and design tools.

Emphasis is on:

• system analysis using ERD and DFD techniques
• system design using user-centered techniques
• use of SA-D to achieve competitive advantage (disintermediation)
• integration of legacy systems and WWW-based systems
• communicating change proposals in a rhetorically effective manner

Objectives After this course, you should be able to:

• understand the system lifecycle approach and its phases.
• apply a structured methodology to the analysis of real-world problems.
• develop a well-designed, coherent requirements specification.
• communicate technical recommendations in an effective manner.

Requirements:

• Text as indicated. Additional readings will be identified throughout the course.
• Every student must have an e-mail account, either at RMC, AOL, work, or the free e-mail services such as Juno 800.654.5866 or www.juno.com, HotMail, or the Three Rivers FreeNet.

Grade Structure. The course grade will be composed of these factors:

• 30% Project Submission
• 20% Project Presentation
• 20% Midterm Exam
• 15% Assignments
• 15% Class Participation

Attendance will be documented by the instructor. Department policy holds that students missing 25% of classes receive a Failing grade.

Integrity: Individuals/Groups who cheat, plagiarize, or misrepresent their work will receive a Failing grade for the course.

Professionalism: Students will behave with professional decorum and restraint. All participants will be treated with respect and dignity.

Assignments are due as indicated. If business travel or personal logistics preclude meeting an assignment, please coordinate with the instructor at the earliest opportunity. Written assignments must be typed, double-spaced, and include a cover sheet. Always identify the question being answered. Grammar and spelling matter.

Presentations must be professional and involve appropriate techniques and materials.

Projects are opportunities to use this course in the real world. If you would like to propose a project that would be useful in your job, life, or portfolio, please do propose it.
